Se7en Opening Analysis

Film Title: Se7en
Director: Kyle Cooper

Technique
Effect (Analysis)
Camera – distance, angle, movement…
  • Throughout the opening of the sequence it shows frequent close and extreme close ups of an anonymous character compiling a book

  • Its quite ambiguous by only showing the characters hand however it is quite scary when you look at what he is putting in the book
Editing – speed, style…
  • Very quick
  • Filters

  • The quick change of shot is something that I find particularly interesting, it only keeps certain shots for a matter of seconds however the shots are so graphic or shocking they stick in your mind and that’s all they require
  • Quite often there is a red filter over the top of the image. This could connote blood and be a hint of things to feature in the film later
Sound – effects, musical score…
  • Loud
  • Distorted sound
  • All non-diegetic

  • All the audio featured in the clip is non-diegetic and sounds like machinery; this is heavy and powerful and connotes danger.
  • The distorted sound could also be a link to the characters distorted mind
  • Also the sound is loud and immediately hits you, this helps create an edgy and tense mood
Mise-en-scene – props, costume, setting, lighting, colour…
  • Mixture of dark and light
  • Props very graphic and disturbing

  • The darkness connotes danger and death
  • The light is symbolic of peace and happiness however I believe it is there to make it clearer to see, of it was all black it would be hard to see however it would set the scene, this is why I think they use some bright lighting
Titles – font, colour, placement, over black / over clip…
  • The font used looks like a pencil scribble
  • Over film

  • The font makes it looked like the character making the book could of made it, this makes it look quite scary.
  • By putting it over film they also make it so that the viewer can focus on both the clip as well suggesting that both are of equal importance
